New beginning

Day 1: Weight 76.5 kilos

Now before you say it, I know that weight is not a true reflection of diet and exercise success, but really, who has time to measure every inch of them every morning?

So for now, I will go by weight daily and maybe take some measurements every now then.

This morning was my first day of at home exercise. I was going to hit it hard whilst I have the enthusiasm, but that kind of approach has never lasted before, so I decided to play it smart. I've been having a little bit of back trouble lately and, seeing as this is about health as well as weightless, I figured yoga was the way to go.

A quick search on YouTube found hundreds of 20 minute yoga lessons. I decided to go for one specific for back issues and chose Yoga for Back Pain from Yoga Current.

It was a simple 20 minute session for beginners, however it did find the press ups at the end a bit beyond my beginner level, so I just adapted down.

I must say, I felt great after. It may not have been a cardio workout but it was great to loosen up my back to start my day and I found I was walking taller all day. I definitely want to carry on with yoga in the mornings as much as possible.

Didn't go for any specific healthy eating today, partly due to this project being a super of the moment thing. Just tried to eat well and logged it all in a calorie counting app, My Fitness Pal. I will see how this goes over the next few days and share my opinion of how useful it is.

Day one done. Feeling good :)

The beginning

I hate the gym. I BLOODY hate it!

There, I said it. I wish it wasn't true but it is. So let's deal with this reality and get on with our lives.

I also have quite an aversion to any exercise for the sake of exercise, which has lead me to where I am today. Less than a year to the big '3' '0', and just 16 weeks to my wedding day, I have a body that isn't  looking or working at its best. Something needs to be done.

So the sensible thing would be to pay a small fortune on a gym membership and spend the next four months sporadically punishing myself in the gym, bidding my time, convincing myself I am doing something when really I am fooling myself. I know this because I have done this, time and time again.

That's not to say gyms aren't great. I WISH I was the gym bunny type, with the self discipline of a nun and a face that doesn't turn into a beetroot after aprox 3mins 42 seconds of cardio, but I am not that person so let's move on swiftly.

So I got to thinking how I can do this on my own, without an expensive gym, with just the things I have around me. What was the first thing I did? I went to our old friend Google, of course, but before I typed in the search bar looking for personal trainers, Zumba classes or running tips, I had an idea.

The internet is a wealth of information. People from all over the world are giving out advice, instruction and ideas from first hand experience. Why not tap into this? There will be a fair amount of useless rubbish to wade through, no dout, but there must be excellent resources for workouts, healthy recipies and general fitness.

So this blog is where I will share what I find. What works, what doesn't work. The innovative, the crazy. The highs and the lows. Taking the DIY approach to healthy body.

Wish me luck ...
